The new Mondeo looks like it wants to be a Lexus, but lightly brushed with the ugly tree a few times on the way. Great, imitating what's already a cheap (er) rip-off of a BMW/Merc. Unlike the old Mondeo, it just looks like all the other amorphous, dull, high-waistlinesd, huge-grilled, stretchy-lighted, flat-fronted cars which are around at the moment. It's not particularly bad, it's just utterly uninspired, although the exterior trim clearly is more 'premium' - perhaps that's what people want. Oodles of tacky chrome trim, which looks completely out of place on a car designed after about 1970.

I do quite like the new C5 from the angle of what it offers at the price, and the vastly improved build quality, though to be honest the design falls into much the same category as the new Mondeo - boring and anonymous. Switching to a saloon/estate format just to move the car upmarket is stupid too. Citroen have always made hatcbacks, and it's what people want to buy in that market segment - the estates go to business fleets and anybody else will be looking for a hatch... Plus, while I'm sure their 2.7 V6 HDI is a very impressive proposition to private car owners, it's sales will be utterly dwarfed by the 2.0 unit so as to make it's presence in the market place fairly irrelevant. Plus, the game has really moved on in diesel engine development. BMW are offering DERVs which do far more miles to the gallon and - importantly for those irritating middle-management w**kers who tend to get something with a V6 in it as a company car - lower CO2 emissions for similarly powered lumps.
