Try wiring both inputs up to permanent live, and make sure that the ground is good. If you do this and the unit still misbehaves, then it's faulty. If it fixes the problem, then consider leaving it like that. It's how I wired the Kenwood system in my Mazda, followed by my first Laguna and finally the wife's Orion. It worked fine in all of them and never killed the battery. (Actually, I did have battery problems with the Laguna, but I think that was something else.)

Don't check the ground using resistance - this won't give a meaningful result. Check the voltage between the stereo chassis and a known good earthing point on the car with the stereo switched on. It should ideally be 0 volts, and certainly a lot less than 1. If it's any higher than that, then your ground connection is useless.
