Sounds like it could be the card reader. It may be dirty. Easiest thing to do is to vacuum it out with the nozzle from a vacuum cleaner and see if that helps.
The good news is, if it is your card reader thats faulty, that they arent coded to the car, so you could get another (new or second hand etc) and pop it in yourself. Dont know about on the Scenic but on the Laguna II its only held in by clips and pulls out.
Have you got another keycard, have you tried that ? If you do and try the spare and it doesnt happen, then that tells you its the card. Very unlikely its the card though.
fault wouldnt cause the card not to be detected, but rather the car not to fire up on ignition.
