Where is the speedo drive?

1998 Scenic RT 1.6e Manual, non ABS. Speedo not working. I have searched the forum but cant find a definitive answer. As I have no wheel sensor I assume the drive is coming from the gearbox? The speed is electronic. The only sensor I can find on the gearbox is right at the bottom, accessible only from under the car, however, if I remove this I would lose all the gerabox oil , plus, I cant see how this would work the speedo, so it's more likely an oil sensor. Where should I be looking to solve this issue, any help grately appreciated.
