The alternator connection is not an 'ignition feed'. In the days of keys, you used to take it from the ignition barrel. Not so easy with the keycard system!
Cigarette lighter sockets are rated at approx 9 amps, so take a look and see if the lighter socket is live without the ignition on. If it isn't live with the ignition off, then use the centre contact as your ignition feed.
If it is live all the time, you will need to find another feed, probably from the fuse / relay box.
As far as the earth is concerned, it is perfectly OK to connected it to the battery -ve.
