Thanks for the advice Delta. I've got a friend who's a mechanic who unforunately this week has started work at quickfit which is why I was forced to take my car to a local garage for repair. He may be able to help with the labour and I've been advised of a local company who can in some cases rebuild a gearbox for a few hundred pounds. If anyone has any further advice it's still welcome.
Go to a special renault breakers. It'll still be expensive but not as bad as a NEW gearbox.
Sorry to hear about your bad luck, thats pants for the box on a car that new to have troubles.
Also consider getting a friend/neighbour who is experienced with cars to do the job for cash (You might have to help lift the box in though as they're heavy and not a one man job).
Garages have the upkeep of their garage, tax, biz rates etc to pay - and that cost is passed onto you.
