I know it's probably of no use to you now but...... have you tired to disconnect the cable from the gearbox first?
First time I tried to get a set of clocks out I couldn't budge the thing due to the cable having no excess. Unsrewed the other end from the box and un threaded it. Pulled the clocks out easy then
As I said no use now but just incase you decide to do it again!
Currently in Mikey's garage:
