Year: 2002
Make: Renault
Model: Clio
Trim: Dymanique
Engine: 1.5 dCi
Mileage: 75,400

I was roadside recovered yesterday due to some gearbox troubles. My car was dropped of at a local garage for diagnostics and possible repair.

I've spoke to the head mechanic today who says that I need an entire replacement gearbox. Their parts supplier's computer is down and he can't currently give me an exact quote however I could be looking at anywhere up to £1,200. Can anyone advise on a reasonable rate for a replacement manual gearbox on a diesel 1.5 Clio? Anyone got any ideas to reduce cost?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Mike

Go to a special renault breakers. It'll still be expensive but not as bad as a NEW gearbox.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, thats pants for the box on a car that new to have troubles.

Also consider getting a friend/neighbour who is experienced with cars to do the job for cash (You might have to help lift the box in though as they're heavy and not a one man job).

Garages have the upkeep of their garage, tax, biz rates etc to pay - and that cost is passed onto you.

Thanks for the advice Delta. I've got a friend who's a mechanic who unforunately this week has started work at quickfit which is why I was forced to take my car to a local garage for repair. He may be able to help with the labour and I've been advised of a local company who can in some cases rebuild a gearbox for a few hundred pounds. If anyone has any further advice it's still welcome.

Thanks again,

Mike

Like I said, just get a scrap gearbox instead. Getting a rebuild is more time thus money.

Sure keep the knackered one, when you got some spare cash consider rebuilding it. At the moment it will probably be cheaper just to get another box from a renault breaker.

Keeping a car on the road (unless you have money) means doing it the cheapest way you can find. Most folk here don't have a lot of cash (or they'd throw the car in a garage and let them deal with it at any cost). Thats why most folk are here - they need advice and tips to keep the cost down.

I'm giving you advice: A box rebuild might be more expensive than a scrap box. Make enquiries on the cost of BOTH before you decide.

Took your advice Delta and picked one up from a local scrap yard for £260 incl delivery. Agreed removal and replacement with my mechanic at £150 fixed rate (about 6 hours) and new clutch assembly for £90; bringing me to a tidy £500.

The replacement gearbox has already done almost 100,00 miles but seems to be in good condition and Im desperate to get back on the road asap. I think I was quite unlucky to have had mine go at 75,000 although over the last 10,000 it has been given a very hard ride.

Drama over :)

Thanks again,

Mike

Don't go to a garage go to a gearbox specialist - look at yell.com

Look for £6-800 fitted for a recon box, though you probably want to get a clutch kit at the same time. This should be £1-200 and with no labour.

Thing with a scrappy box you may end up paying twice for the labour as you fit another six months down the line... At least a recon will have been err,,,, reconned! :d

Yes it most certainly is! Very smooth, very quiet, very powerful. Only snag is trying to get someone to do the bloody cam belt. 2 mechanics have failed miserably so it might not be such a good engine for much longer lol. Might end up taking it off the road and then waiting for a rebuild :(

Afraid not. It's booked in with a local mechanic on Tuesday.

He has already recieved the gearbox and says he can't be sure if it's right until my car arrives. It's being recovered by yet another company for £35+ VAT.

The cost of getting to work and back is already becoming another hard hit i don't need!

It's not that it's that I work anywhere from 7am til 2am and often can't even use public transport! Saving for a gearbox, a £1,600 car insurance renewal and getting to work are going to see me broke.

I now remember my mechanics exact words: "It looks like an older mechanical gearbox to me but I can't be sure until I see the car."

So if anyone can shed any layman’s light on that I'd be grateful.

Final update - I did get this resolved a few weeks ago now.

The saga did go on for 2 and a half weeks. 2 or 3 gearboxes came from the scrap-yard but all wrong.
Got a recon gearbox from a proper Renault breaker in Lancs for £250 and £20 next day delivery.

Did have a problem and had to be recovered 2 days later when my crankshaft positioning sensor went, but since then I've put my ECU re-map chip back in and its been running sweet as a nut. Still within my 3 month guarantee on the gearbox too.
