Onboard computer wossname, and the accuracy thereof

I'm driving a 2001 1.6 Scenic Dynamique, which I've had for a little over a month.

When my onboard computer says I've still got 97 miles of petrol left in the tank (about 2.5 gallons), but the fuel tank indicator is hovering just above red, which one do I believe?

How accurate, I ask, are the electronics?
