I wonder if the wet weather in Scotland has got water / moisture into the spark plug wells & damaged the spark plugs?
It's fairly easy to remove the plugs & check them. I.e. that they are not still wet (with water) on the outside & there is not a give-away 'tide-mark' line on the white insulator indicating that they have been under water at some time.
If so, the plug insulation can be damaged and cause behaviour similar to that you described?
