A Renault mechanic has said that it may be a wiring loom that apparently fits under the fuse box (£900).
Ouch. Do you get a complementary replacement engine with that?
I guess the dodgy loom contains engine management stuff, so it's possible that the problem is related. Personally I'd like to hear a *lot* of rationale from the mechanic as to why he things the loom is at fault. I can't see what could go wrong with it, other than being sheared or majorly crushed by something. And if that's the case then the damage should be pretty evident, and I'm sure the wiring could be repaired by someone with a packet of terminal blocks, lots of insulating tape, and a few hours spare.
Anyway... that's the worst case scenario.
For the immediate problem, it's always worth checking this one...
