When the voltage regulator goes duff it usually also affects the temp gauge. It could be the float on the sender unit is stuck or punctured. Does the low fuel warning light illuminate. First I would check if any voltage is coming from the sender unit which is usualy located under the rear seat. Check its external conections are sound. A cheap option may be to source one from a scrappie.
