Is it digital or analogue ( needle) ?
Is it autoranging or do you have to set the voltage range?

If you select V or voltage and it is autoranging you need do nothing else - just read off the values. Black lead from meter goes to ground or earth, red lead on the wire you are measuring.

if you have to select the range set it to the nearest range to 12volts you can, obviously slightly above. It may have 10,20,50, etc ranges so set it to 20volts. try to set it so that the voltage you are looking for is approx in the middle of the range selected, that way if voltage is slightly higher than expected you shouldn't blow the fuse in the meter.

Without seeing the meter itself it is very difficult to be any more specific, sorry.
