I understand the truckers dilemma as it is that their jobs are directly affected by the additional expense. But they also have the possibility of passing on their additional costs but the average man in the street has practically no way of doing so. One other aspect to consider is that should the goverment reduce tax or duty on fuel would it not mean that we as drivers would be indirectly subsidising the oil companies (cheaper fuel would mean we would use more - hence more profit) who would probaly just rake it more profits. The price of fuel has rocketed for one reason and one reason only - demand is beginning to outstrip supply. If the government reduces taxation on fuel it will either have to find another source of taxation or reduce its expenditure - either way it the guy in the street who will have to cough up. If you ask any member of the oil producing countries in the world whats the best thing they could do with their oil and the resouding answer would be - keep it in the ground - that way its future proof and can only increase in value.
Yeah but the tax on fuel is proportional to price - higher the price higher the tax. Makes no sense. And the tax on derv is the same as the tax on petrol. Makes no sense.
