Yeah but the tax on fuel is proportional to price - higher the price higher the tax. Makes no sense. And the tax on derv is the same as the tax on petrol. Makes no sense.
The big lump of tax, ie the fuel duty, is a fixed sum (53.65 pence per litre on unleaded, at present). Obviously the amount of VAT levied will vary according to the underlying price.
