My view - for what it's worth..

I have owned R5GTT, R25, Clio Valver, Lag 1 Ph1, Lag II Ph2..

I have never bought brand new but have one very important rule for buying a 2nd hand car...

FSH.. Full Service History

If the vehicle has been serviced in accordance with Renault rec's then their is a lesser chance of needing a new engine, clutch, brake master cylinder and other parts covered by the servicing..

Also take someone with you, ask probing questions about the car and don't get too drawn into general chit chat.

Sounds harsh perhaps but at the end of the day you got to pay to keep it on the road.

All my renaults have been fine motors and I have never ( touch wood ) had a breakdown resulting in a tow for the last 12 years ( Mr RAC take note - your making money out of me )

With the current car however it must be said that things like the window regs failing prematurely has made me consider changing loyalitys.

Now where's the Mazda, Honda forums
