The fault registered in the
can be cleared by many garages - not just Renault. And in many cases will clear itself when repairs have been made. It would probably be cheaper to take the car to someone who can do it rather than run the risk of removing the
with its inherent re-fitting problems. You may have got confused by the difference between the
which only registers the fault and the restraint activator ( an entirely separate unit) which may also need to be replaced (this is possibly what you have been quoted for). The activatation unit is basically an accelerometer which measures rapid deceleration thus activating the restraint system. Many of these units are designed for one use only (similar to the seat belt tensioners) and if replaced (whether new or second hand) will need to be programmed to the
. For obvious safety and legal reasons Renault are barred from reprogramming second hand or used units.
