The problem is that most dealers don't have the facilities or equipment to do the re-gassing themselves. They end up calling in a contractor, and then adding their own margin onto the cost of his work.
For a straight re-gas, you'd want to cut out the middle man and go straight to an air-con specialist. But if you think you've got a problem that may involve warranty repairs, then you've not much choice other than to pay what the dealer is asking.
If my experience is anything to go by, they'll re-gas the system and see if it holds. If it doesn't (and mine didn't) you can expect the car to be off the road for at least three days: One for the contractor to come out and discharge it (even if it's lost all of its gas already), one or more for the dealer to carry out the repairs, and another for the contractor to come out and re-gas it. Yes, I know it doesn't take a full working day to re-gas the air-con system, but that's the way it seems to go.
