Have you tried starting it with the clutch depressed? Sometimes the switch on the gear selector (that tells it that it's in neutral) fails. If that happens, the car thinks it's in gear and disables the starter unless you hold down the clutch.
Though it sounds to me like the starter motor's probably shot. I think the card swapping thing is a red herring - it's probably just starting intermittently. In the good old days, you used to just reach into the engine compartment with a piece of wood and a hammer and give the starter a whallop, but you can't do that on the Lag without getting underneath the car and taking the undertray off.
One thing that's worth checking is the battery connections. If one of them is loose (or the battery or engine is badly earthed) then you won't get enough current through to run the starter.
