Thanks to all for replies, found the Basil method not too sucessful.
However now found fault to be with negative terminal on battery. Although everything else worked ok, the faulty terminal bracket made a resistance to the power required for the starter motor. Since replacing clamp and cleaning I've had no further problems.
By the way the car is a Dynamique Estate which was not available in England, but after nearly 4 years been a very good car.
