the espace and my gal do have reinforced rears ans small cruple zones. The enrgy is meant to go throught the chassis in a rear end shunt.
But in a focus or astra meganne hit by a lorry and bye bye rear passengers or MANY small family cars!

I beileve one advantage of an Espace, well the latest shape anyway, is that the curtain airbags protect the third row of passagers: these seats are not protected in many people carriers, e.g. Renault Scenic.
It is also interesting that NCAP do not appear to test for rear end shunts.
