When activated the ESP system is constantly monitoring the steering position even when the car is travelling in a straight line - it's the
updating itself. As it needs to re-act quickly and correctly when required it has to be able to measure any changes. In other words it is always comparing data. It also monitors engine and car speed and also helps control the ABS system. A bit too complicated for my liking but a very nifty piece of kit all the same especially when it comes to turning at speed when braking and preventing the vehicle going out of control.
