I'm curious as to whether this is a phone reception problem or a bluetooth problem. Does the display show the 'no signal' icon (phone handset with a diagonal line through it) when the signal drops, or does the phone icon disappear altogether?
The one real flaw of going Bluetooth is that you don't get an external antenna, though I've found reception not to be significantly different to when I had a tax disc holder style antenna on my old Nokia CARK-91 kit with my 6310.
But Bluetooth implementations can be flakey too, and certain phones aren't compatible with certain other equipment (by way of an example, hands-free on the TomTom GO is a nightmare for this.) Out of interest, which phone are you using? My Carminat system seems to work pretty well with both my Nokia 6230 and my Motorola V535.
