It should be OK to drive the car to the garage for repairs but first do an under bonnet check of the levels (coolant oil , etc). Also keep a close eye on the dash for other warning lights and monitor the engine temp closely.
I don't understand why you mentioned the MOT test - you have to remember the test is only an examination of crucial safety aspects if the car and does not involve a service repair or maintenance.

If it's a petrol engine it could be the dreaded coil failure - a fairly common renault problem.

When posting a problem it would help if you included details regarding the exact model and engine type - then members may be able to assist
