Guys, thanks, the model is an Alpine, I tried the reset trick but no good. I did however get it working again, I think the problem is mechanical with a CD not relocating back into the CD cartridge when it changes so it jams. As I pressed the cartridge release button I gave it a sharp tap on the top of the cartridge and it released!
The cartridge itself doesn't look worn or damaged so I suspect something worn in the changer mechanics.
P.S. My original post contains a comment that I made which seems to have been abridged, sorry if I offended but I've had a lot of different makes of car over the years - none have been perfect but I think Renaults attitude to dealing with problems I had when this car when it was "in warranty" vehicle was poor.
