I thought I posted here earlier. Oh well...

The burning smell, combined with the poor blower output on lower speeds suggests to me that the blower resistor pack is on its way out. In theory, there are thermal fuses in there that should fail before the unit gets dangerously hot, but I suppose it's possible that a previous owner has bodged a repair by bypassing the fuses, and the smell might be the resistor pack getting dangerously hot.
