Hi Ginga - I can assure you I was not attempting to slight the seller in any way.
It's just in these tough financial times everyone needs to do their sums. It may be prudent to ask why she didn't trade it in and what she was offered. It could be the garage concerned offered a poor price especially if they new it was due a new cam belt.
Very few people are prepared to sell a car for less than its trade-in value. It is not unknown for people to change their car if they are likely to be faced with a hefty service or repair bill in the near future.
It's nothing personal it's just simple economics
