Adding water into the fuel air mix is certainly a performance boost. It increases the compression ratio, and improves the burn rate.
I remember reading some stuff on the subject a number of years ago - I'm sure it was in CCC magazine - and they had some reasonable results with it. Without it, their engine was suffering from detonation problems and with it they managed a gain of about 5bhp or so ......... well worth it NOT !!
No doubt things have moved on a bit since then.
