If the light goes out once the engine is running then the first port of call would be the battery or its connections etc, and if all's ok there then perhaps the starter.

I had the battery light come on one of my old Cavs years ago (first off it used to come on when puttting the rear demister on - more strain on the alternator) whilst driving and that turned out to be the alternor. I'd suspect this first, get it checked out (with a load test) and go from there.
