If there was oil spilled on the rocker top cover as you describe, then in all honesty I would suggest the burning oil smell is simply the oil burning off from on top of the cylidner head and or the exhaust downpipe manifold (if it has dripped down). This sort of thing happens all the time when a bit of oil has been spilled and is harmless. Personally I quite like the smell (sad I know) but it's the smell of a clean oil change and doesn't hang around for long.
Although you should never overfill a car, I've owned many cars that have been (slightly) overfilled with oil (main dealers are the worst culprits) and I've never had a problem. These days I do my own oil changes (because I know I can trust myself to do it right!!).

Run the car for a few more days and if the smell does not fade, get it checked.

It maybe worth going over the engine bay withg a rag and mopping up any spills first to see if this helps.
Best of luck.
