Its more difficult to compare, as back then, there was only one tariff (regardless of engine size/emissions), whereas now?

Its probably gone up for anything larger than a supermini - but the figures would be so hard to research than nobody would bother.

My gut instinct is that cars have gotten cheaper in real terms (otherwise why would there be so much more of them on the roads?), but the cost of running them has become much more expensive.
