Tickover problem

My car is a 2000 Scenic 1.6 16v auto (104,000kms). Recently, without warning, the tickover has become very erratic! Sometimes it will tickover normally, sometimes barely at all, other times 2000-2500rpms. On most occasions it will start OK although if the tickover is very low it might cut out if I don't rev the engine. The tickover speed now appears to be completely random whereas previously it was as steady as a rock! This fault doesn't seem to be affected by the engine temperature. Obviously it would be good to have some indication as to the source of the problem before I get it checked out professionally. So far the car has shown no signs of breaking down....just a wildly fluctuation tickover! I live in Cyprus which by nature can be extremely hot and extremely dusty too.
