The Monaco was indeed an L1 model. Very nice spec too. I wanted one second time around, but ended up with another RXE instead.
The 12v 3 litre did indeed only put out around 160bhp, which isn't that much more than the 140 of the 2.0 16v. The real benefits will be in torque, with the 2.0 having to be worked a lot harder to achieve similar performance.
The Later L1's (possibly the Phase 2) got the 24v version of the v6 donk. I vaguely recall a figure around the 190bhp mark, though I could be wrong.
