That's definately the light for glow plugs in a deisel lights up and then extinguishes when the plugs are warm enough to start the car.

However my manual mentions something about electrical faults if this lights up though. I didn't think this would have any purpose on a petrol car though.

Have you local garage run a diagnostics test on the car yet . It's sounds very much like it could be something electrical causing your problem.
