I assume that you've checked that the brake lights are working then and that you haven't got a bulb out?
Sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious. I know on certain Vauxhall models the check brake light is illuminated on starting up the car, by depressing the foot brake the message is cleared, provided the brake lights all operate. One bulb out and the fault message will remain.
on scenics an 'electronic fault' message will appear when a brake light bulb is out. usually after reconnecting the battery the parking brake light will go out after releasing and reengaging the parking brake
