I was reading a discussion of this subject on another site between car dealers, and it appears that you don't need trade plates to drive a car to a pre-booked MOT, even if it's untaxed.
Obviously, you do need third party insurance as a minimum, as you said, and you must ensure that the car is road legal to the best of your knowledge (i.e. saying you're on the way to an MOT won't get you off the hook for having bald tyres, 'cause that's obvious.)
I presume it has to be this way to allow not-yet-registered kit cars to attend their first MOTs...?
