Renault Laguna 1 - JC5 Gearbox Info

A while ago I posted about trying to get a gearbox for my Laguna Mk1 2.0l 16v Rti S. I encountered all sorts of woes and post this as a cautionary tale for others.

After confirmation that the box was bust I turned to Ebay . I found a JC5 box on sale by Craig from, that was advertised as having come off a Laguna like mine. Craig even said that he'd driven the car before taking the box off. I bought it as a 'buy now' for 125 and for 40 more he delivered it to the garage. So far so good.

I then had a call from the garage to say that it had the wrong bell-housing (sp?). I looked at the two and they were clearly different (I posted pictures on the previous thread). Craig informed me that it would be an easy task to just swap the bell-housings. My garage disagreed, so much so that they declined to do the work, calling it a bodge job.

I then got into numbers. The box that came off my car is a JC5037. The box from AP-developments was a JC5111. Craig insists it was off a similar Laguna to mine, but my garage insist it is not off a Laguna at all.

I tried the local Renault dealers but they were unable to tell me which car the JC5111 was fitted to! In need of transport, and with refund refused, I tried the scrapyard approach.

I found one with a JC5037 box for sale. Being doubly prudent, I asked what Laguna it had come off and was told the 8-valve model. Some quick research suggested that the tolerances etc would be different on an 8v to a 16v. So I nearly bought another wrong box.

Despondent, I then contacted RS Transmissions in Bradford to buy a reconditioned box. I told a bloke there called Stuart about my woes and, to avoid further confusion, he had my original box collected, repaired and returned (with a guarantee) in three days, for 411 all in. More importantly, it still fitted and works fine.

So, if you're about to buy a box for a Laguna be aware that it's not enough to know that it's a JC5, or even the three numbers that follow -- you have to also make sure that it's from a similar cc and valve engine, and it seems the only way of doing this is by asking.

If anyone does discover a list of the Renault boxes and which cars they correspond to, would you please post it?
