The first thing I'd try is make sure you don't have any major fuel leaks underneath the car first,and then put another 20 or more litres into it.This will take a number of possible things out of the equation.

If that doesn't work,then you have to suspect the sender unit in the tank.

EDIT;Just one thing,do all the other gauges on the dash work OK?.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
