The theory I've heard with the badging scheme is that the letters are just extracted from the consonants in the word 'Renault.' The first letter is always the 'R', and the second letter denotes the spec, with the higher spec vehicles having letters from later in the word.
That worked when they had RN, RL and RT models. When they wanted to go higher than the RT, the system broke down, so they had to come up with RXE.
Sounds barmy enough to be true to me. Well they are French
So whatever happened to the RU then along with the RA?
