Thanks for your advice madnoel10 and Lagdti, I tried to combine your ideas. I cleaned the connections, both in the unit under the car near the left passenger footwell and the one in the left rear wheel housing (allthough the black boxes were grubby all connections looked like new) after using electrical cleaner, re-sealed and replaced them. I also disconnected battery overnight - same effect! So when I drove it, all four wheels on display - no warnings, then after 3 miles all four wheels disappear together - back to square one.
Compared with gearboxes and blown engines its a small problem but whilst I was tinkering, if it was fixable I'd give it a go because its been bugging me. But I've probably spent too much time on this problem (or so my wife says - bank holiday weekend etc.)
