In what way did the speedo stop working? - Did it just fall to zero and not come up or did it stick at the current speed?
You need to be a bit more descriptive
I had a speedo stick on our safrane... That was a nightmare but at least I didn't get engine troubles with it. If your engine is sounding rough then it might be an electrical problem somewhere and not a speedo fault.
If it is a speedo fault you should know Renault don't fix speedos. They only replace the entire unit at a rather hefty (and profitable) cost. Mine seemed to be a warped plastic panel on the speedo unit which was changed for one from the local scrappy. I've had no problems since..
(This seems to apply to digital but not sure about cable driven speedo's):
If your speedo is sticking its probably something similar since they are infact
based similar to a electric motor. They are sprung loaded and fall straight back to zero when the power is off or when the signal allows it. If yours won't fall to zero then something is jamming it.
