It could well be. I don't think CD ever stood for CD Player in Europe though. In fact, I'm pretty sure I recall my mum looking at a MkII Astra CD at one point, and I think that only had a radio/cassette.
Yep I think you're right Horatio - Cavalier CD's didn't necessarily have a CD player as standard, I think that honour went to top of the range Diplomats for example
Maybe it is just a Japanese quirk, and probably a bit of "urban myth" stuff too.
