If a Renault garage changes the barrels and key the old key will be useless. If left unchanged your insurer may refuse to pay out if the car is stolen again. It is prudent to change the barrels, etc. Think about it - would you be happy if some tea-leaf was running around with the keys to the front door of your house. Whilst the thief may not attempt to use it again he may be tempted to sell it on to someone else.
As a matter of interest how did the thief get his hands on your key in the first place.
