Renault Espace III - Brake pedal switch

I bought a 1999 T Espace a couple of weeks ago, however yesterday evening whilst driving home from work I thought the car behind was driving a bit too close when I stopped at junctions.

Carefully positioning my vehicle at a set of traffic lights I noticed that the brake lights were not reflecting in the other cars headlights. I checked them once I returned home to find that under normal braking the lights do not illuminate. Unless you press the pedal down so far that you have whiplash marks from the seatbelt.

A friend at work has told me that the brake light switch needs adjusting? He tried to have a look at it today, but we were unable to remove the dashboard panel which has the dimmer switch in it, so we could access the switch.

Does anyone know if the switch would require adjustment? Or where the screws are hidden for removing the panel?

The model of Espace is the one with the vents in the mirrors.
