I seem to remember seeing somewhere that it's recommended to turn on the side-lights before connecting the jump-leads. It seems to cut down on surges.
Personally, I think it is more important to avoid making sparks when connecting and that's why I would connect both positive ends first then the negative to the good battery and lastly the negative to the chassis or engine. I guess this can also be done with the sidelights on so I'll bear that in mind should the need ever arise again.
