There was a spokeswoman from the AA on the radio yesterday talking about this very subject.

Basically she said this of the premium fuels;

Premium petrol is pointelss in low power cars below the 1.8/2.0 range.

Premium diesel is of merit in all "modern" diesel engines, regardless of engine size.

She then went on to say she drove a high-miler Rover 25 turbo diesel which IIRC is an "L series" old Rover engine design and is certainly not a modern unit (ie common rail and all that gubbins)... Read into what the "almighty AA" say as you like
