Hi there Dave.
I've used and recommended a product in the past called Tiger Seal - it is a flexible (yet very strong) PU adhesive.
Google it and you'll get more details - its used for affixing spoilers & bodykits onto cars, so a bit of trim will pose no probs.
Just use it sparingly (it can be messy), and place heavy items such as a phonebook onto the trim to hold it in place until it has bonded (a couple of hours).

Of course a strip of tape on the roof outside of the plastic strip before applying the adhesive will prevent mess. Just make sure you don't glue the phone book to the roof, that will spoil the lines more
