The injection light will illuminate for numerous reasons - anything from water in the fuel to a failed injection pump or turbo fault. IT is even known to light up when you run out of fuel.
You mention the engine doesn't seem to be powering up correctly - this could be down to a dirty or duff EGR valve or the turbo not kicking in when it should. The EGR valve fault would be my first port of call.
I take it the mechanic was using a generic code reader
