Broader tyres don't always mean better grip. Tyre traction can be a very fine balance between the area of surface contact and ground pressure - this can be especially noticable in the wet as the risk of aquaplaning can increase. Also in my experience broader tyres can upset the steering and suspension geometry and as a general rule road noise increases.
