It's just the way that they've programmed the thing. If you have it in metric mode, then there's an instantaneous economy function on the trip computer. If you have it set to imperial, then there isn't. Why? We've never had a definitive answer. Personally, I think they still hold a grudge over Agincourt

It could be changed, but it'd have to be done by whoever developed the software for the dash (Marelli for a guess.) The only practical way of getting this sorted is to take the car to the dealer and have them switch it over to metric, but I doubt that's the answer you're looking for.
